OIL GILDING
Precious gold leaf can be found right across the country in many architectural forms and elements from external substrates and weathervanes to gilded lettering in carved stone plaques and statues. In this workshop, we will be gilding using a plaster cast. When sealed, even plaster may be oil gilded (though it should not be exposed to the elements). A gilding technique is used whereby gold leaf is adhered using an oil mordant. An enamel primer coat is applied initially which aids in the reflection of the gold. Once the correct drying timing is reached, gold leaf is then laid onto the surface, resulting in a beautiful solid gold look.

VERRÉ EGLOMISÉ
The ancient practice of gilding on glass (Verré Eglomisé) will also form part of this workshop. The earliest known examples date from 3rd to 5th centuries when the Egyptians and Romans decorated the bases of vessels with decorative motifs. Gilding onto the reverse side of glass creates a wonderful mirrored effect. You will learn the skill of how to cut, lay and apply delicate gold leaf sheets. Your own design or drawing is scored into the gold leaf and then sealed with a coloured lacquer.

Please be sure that you have read our Eligibility Criteria, Selection, and Applications section at the bottom of the Workshop page before applying.
