Venue: Dumfries House
Dates: This workshop did not run for 2019.
You will have the unique chance to learn two specialist techniques: Oil gilding, and gilding on glass (Verré Églomisé).
What is Gilding?
Gilding is a decorative technique for applying a very thin coating of gold to solid surfaces.
By the end of this workshop you will have created a beautiful, solid gold looking object by laying a gold leaf onto the surface. In addition to this, you will also create a wonderful mirrored effect on glass by applying gold leaf to the reverse side of the it.
What to Expect
For oil gilding we will be gilding using a plaster cast. When sealed, even plaster may be oil gilded. An enamel primer coat is applied initially which aids in the reflection of the gold. Once the correct drying timing is reached, gold leaf is then laid onto the surface, resulting in a beautiful solid gold look.
For Verré Églomisé you will learn the skill of how to cut, lay and apply delicate gold leaf sheets on glass. Your own design or drawing is scored into the gold leaf and then sealed with a coloured lacquer.
The workshop will be run by The Creative Dimension Trust Tutor and Master Gilder, Rian Kanduth. Rian has over thirty years’ practice and experience in the field of conservation and gilding, with a special expertise in all aspects of gilding from water gilding to oil gilding and Verré Églomisé.
