2022: Making a Child’s Chair

Workshop Information

Course Outline

During this workshop students will create a small, traditionally upholstered oak chair with gilded elements. Students will learn about frame construction methods, staining and surface finishes and apply this knowledge in making their chair.

Students will create a traditionally upholstered drop-in seat using sustainable materials and centuries-old techniques and covered in a fabric of their choice. Students will be introduced to the wonders of gilding and create a series of gilded patrea in 22ct gold leaf for their chairs.

 

All materials will be provided for students in the workshop.

 

This course will be run by Creative Dimension Tutors Iain Stephens, Hendrik van der Poel and Gary Wilson.
Iain is the Senior Conservator – Restorer of Upholstery in the Royal Household and serves as a verifier for the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishings. Hendrik studied furniture Conservation at West Dean College and is currently working as a furniture conservator for the Royal Household. Gary is the Senior Gilding Conservator-Restorer at the Royal Household with nearly 40 years’ experience in his field.

 

Timings

This workshop will start daily at 9am and finish at approximately 4pm.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible to apply you will need to be 16 – 19 years old during the dates of the workshop.

You should be creative and have an interest in the careers listed above, or similar areas. You should also have good hand-eye co-ordination.

In your application you should demonstrate a passion for working with your hands.

You must be able to attend every day of the workshop.

Our workshops are fully-funded by generous sponsors.  Places are limited, therefore, we recommend you submit your application as early as possible.
