Workshop Information
Course Details
This workshop will teach the basics of hand embroidery, focusing on thread painting and colour theory where students will complete a small thread painting to take home.
Day 1
- Introducing materials and terms.
- Introducing basic stitches needed for thread painting.
- Framing up: how to start and finish.
- Stitching and experimenting with any other stitches the students would like to try.
Day 2
- Introduction to colour theory followed by exercises (collage and cut and paste).
- Using colour theory to select colours for the embroidery design.
- Blending and mixing colours.
Day 3
- 3D petal for the Tassel project.
Day 4
- Continued blending and mixing of colours.
- Adding texture with knots and surface stitches.
- Continuation of stitching and finishing.
Meet the Tutor
Lucy Newman, an embroidery artist known for her unique abstract thread paintings, opened LJN STUDIO, her bespoke hand embroidery studio, in 2017. Notable achievements include winning the Hand & Lock Prize in 2022 and being shortlisted for the Fine Art Textile Award. Lucy’s innovative exploration of AI in her work has also earned her recognition in the artistic community.
Timings
This workshop will start daily at 10am and finish at approximately 4:30pm.

Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible to apply you will need to be 16 – 19 years old during the dates of the workshop.
You should be creative and have an interest in the careers listed above, or similar areas. You should also have good hand-eye co-ordination.
In your application you should demonstrate a passion for working with your hands.
You must be able to attend every day of the workshop.

Course Funding
Our workshops are fully-funded by generous sponsors. Places are limited, therefore, we recommend you submit your application as early as possible.
