Summer 2026: Embroidery with beads, sequins, embellishment and texture

Course Details
This workshop will give students an opportunity to explore decorative materials through playful experimentation with surface and texture. Taking inspiration from couture embroidery and contemporary textile practice, students will be guided through different techniques using beads, sequins and thread.
This one-day workshop will focus on colour, texture, movement and detail, encouraging students to test ideas, combine materials and discover how embellishment can transform a piece of fabric. Students will use these techniques to develop their own couture-inspired sample or small textile piece.
Meet the Tutor
Lucy Newman, an embroidery artist known for her unique abstract thread paintings, opened LJN STUDIO, her bespoke hand embroidery studio, in 2017. Notable achievements include winning the Hand & Lock Prize in 2022 and being shortlisted for the Fine Art Textile Award. Lucy’s innovative exploration of AI in her work has also earned her recognition in the artistic community.
Timings
This workshop will start daily at 10am and finish at approximately 4:30pm.

Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible to apply you will need to be 16 – 19 years old during the dates of the workshop.
You should be creative and have an interest in the careers listed above, or similar areas. You should also have good hand-eye co-ordination.
In your application you should demonstrate a passion for working with your hands.
You must be able to attend every day of the workshop.

Our workshops are fully-funded by generous sponsors. Places are limited, therefore, we recommend you submit your application as early as possible.
There are only 15 spaces available on this workshop. If the workshop becomes oversubscribed, we will close the application process early.
