Autumn 2023: Leatherwork

Venue: Cockpit, Deptford

Dates: This workshop ran for five days from Monday 23rd October 2023 until Friday 27th October 2023.

Workshop Information

Course Outline

Students will begin the first half of the week making small leather goods. This includes cardholders, keychain lanyards, A5 pouches. Here, they will learn the basic leatherworking techniques such as cutting from a pattern, saddle stitching, cutting, glueing, attaching hardware and various kinds of edge finishings. All the while practising and perfecting the techniques before moving onto a larger item such as a bag by midweek. Candice Lau is an award winning master leatherworker. She has worked with the likes of Coach, Bang and Olufsen, Toast, V&A, amongst others. She has been awarded the QEST scholarship, the Arts Council’s Develop Your Creative Practice grant, shortlisted for the Heritage Craft Association’s Maker of the Year Award.

 

Timings

This workshop will start daily at 10am and finish by approximately 4:30pm.

 

Venue

This workshop will be held at Cockpit Studios in Deptford, London. Cockpit is a space which bridges the gap between talent and opportunity, by providing affordable studio space and in-house business support to talented makers.

 

Transferable Skills and Future Careers

All of our workshops give you a valuable chance to develop a range of transferable skills. This leather workshop will enable students to develop a range of leather crafting skills in bag and accessories making. It will help them explore the possibility of creating their own brand and business in this field, or work in fashion houses in bag and accessories design and development. Some of the career choices include; accessories design, fashion design, traditional leather crafting, leather technology, samping, etc.

 

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible to apply you will need to be 14 – 19 years old during the dates of the workshop.

You should be creative and have an interest in the careers listed above, or similar areas. You should also have good hand-eye co-ordination.

In your application you should demonstrate a passion for working with your hands.

You must be able to attend every day of the workshop.

Course Funding

Our workshops are fully-funded by generous sponsors.  Places are limited, therefore, we recommend you submit your application as early as possible.

 

There are only 10 spaces available on this workshop. If the workshop becomes oversubscribed, we will close the application process early.
