Course Details
Have you ever wondered what goes into the cutting and making of high fashion garments? This course will guide you through the techniques used by designers to make inspiring 3D details in cloth. Panels, layers, pockets, collars and cuffs, design detailing creates the architecture of a garment!
By exploring experimental pattern cutting methods popularised by the Japanese designers of the late 20th century, classic tailoring methods mastered by Savile Row London and haute couture stitching methods used by the Paris houses, you will design, cut and make a *toile ‘sampler’.
Based on the methods utilised within your tutor Ian Scott Kettle’s accessories, this sampler will be a multi layered ’toile’ detail, that utilises all you have learned.
A perfect introduction for those interested in both textile art and fashion design (menswear or women’s).
- Drafted a series of 3D ‘cuts’
- Developed a series of stitch samples
- Experimented with pressing, basting and finishing
- Designed, cut and made a 3D piece if textile art: *toile ‘sampler’
Meet the Tutor
Ian Scott Kettle BA (CSM) MA (RCA)
Ian is the head of Fashion Design on the Semester Study Abroad Programme here at Central Saint Martins, along side running the Introduction to Fashion programme, as well as setting-up and delivering bespoke one-to-one and group design courses here and in Mexico, Buenos Aires and China for beginners, industry professionals and the odd celebrity.
Ian is a well respected freelance designer with over twenty years experience, having worked for several independent designers, including Dexter Wong -Head of Womenswear & Alberta Ferretti – Designer and running his own business. His own work has been profiled in many magazines (Vogue, Elle, Grazia,WWD, ID, Nylon & 125…) He has contributed to projects in the arts, film, theatre and pop. (Cindy Sherman, Toyah and Michael Jackson…)
IAN SCOTT KETTLE is Ian’s current business of Gentlemen’s Bespoke Accessories. One-off, hand made pieces, catering to private clients, run from his studio at Cockpit Arts in London. This workshop will start daily at 10am and finish at approximately 4:30pm.

Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible to apply you will need to be 16 – 19 years old during the dates of the workshop.
You should be creative and have good hand-eye co-ordination. In your application you should demonstrate a passion for working with your hands.
You must be able to attend every day of the workshop.
