Course Details
This four-day workshop focuses on Jacobean crewel work embroidery. Students will learn the history of this traditional art form and master a variety of foundational stitches. By the end of the workshop, participants will have completed a Jacobean crewel work piece. Beginners will gain essential hand embroidery skills, while those with experience will expand their knowledge and technique.
Day 1
- Learning the history of Jacobean crewel work and viewing examples
- Introducing basic materials and terms
- Getting started: framing up and preparing the work
- Basic stitches: holding stitch, stab stitch, split stitch, and line work
Day 2
- Filling stitches: long and short stitch, trellis stitch, and satin stitch
- Applying these stitches to the embroidery piece
Day 3
- Surface stitches: fly stitch, raised stem stitch, and more
- Enhancing the work with texture and dimension
Day 4
- Knot stitches: French knots, bullion knots, etc
- Finalising and finishing the embroidery piece
Meet the Tutor
Lucy Newman, an embroidery artist known for her unique abstract thread paintings, opened LJN STUDIO, her bespoke hand embroidery studio, in 2017. Notable achievements include winning the Hand & Lock Prize in 2022 and being shortlisted for the Fine Art Textile Award. Lucy’s innovative exploration of AI in her work has also earned her recognition in the artistic community.
Timings
This workshop will start daily at 10am and finish at approximately 4:30pm.

Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible to apply you will need to be 16 – 19 years old during the dates of the workshop.
You should be creative and have good hand-eye co-ordination. In your application you should demonstrate a passion for working with your hands.
You must be able to attend every day of the workshop.

Course Funding
Our workshops are fully-funded by generous sponsors. Places are limited, therefore, we recommend you submit your application as early as possible.
