Summer 2023: Fortnums x TCDT Employment Programme: History, Retail & Merchandising

← Back to Previous Workshops

Venue: Fortnum & Mason, Piccadilly, London

This Workshop ran on 1 August 2023

In the first of a series of employment programme workshops, run in collaboration with Fortnum & Mason, students explored Fortnum & Mason’s History and Archives with Dr. Tanner and Louise Woof. They then discovered what it is like to work within the store’s Retail and Merchandising departments.

Each Fortnums x TCDT Employment Programme workshop allows students to meet with at least two different departments to learn about their role and growth in the business, what they love doing and some of the challenges. Speakers will also offer career advice should the students wish to grow their career in the visited departments.

Workshop Information

The first of a series of employment programme workshops run in collaboration with Fortnum & Mason.

This session will first explore Fortnum & Mason’s History and Archives with Dr. Tanner and Louise Woof. You will then discover what it is like working within the store’s Retail and Merchandising departments.

Retail focuses on customer services and commercial awareness in our stores. Merchandising determines the number of products needed for the store to meet its sales forecast. They look at the store’s forecast and decide how to maximise sales through how the product is displayed.

Each Fortnums x TCDT Employment Programme workshop will consist of having two different departments speaking to students about their role and growth in the business, what they love doing and some of the challenges. They will also offer career advice should the students wish to grow their career in the said departments. There will be Q&A sessions with each speaker so students can ask specific questions.
