Summer 2022: ARCHITECTURAL MODEL MAKING

This Workshop ran 25 July 2022 – 12 August 2022

Three lucky students had the opportunity to learn the art of Architectural modelling in an exciting and creative environment, with uninterrupted guidance from one of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris’ senior in-house model makers.

Spring 2022: Draw and Paint The Tree Of Life

This Workshop ran on 7 April 2022

The Tree of Life is a recurring motif in many arts. They contain deep symbolism, being embodiments of celestial and vital energies. But even without the complex layers of symbolism…. the tree, whatever else it is, is a giver of life. A beautiful thing to be celebrated and give gratitude for.

 

During this course, students learned how to improve their drawing skills and incorporate the compass and ruler to create a harmonious foundation for the tree of life. Their final designs explored the art of Indian ink and white gauche, inspired by traditional Indian Folk Art.

Spring 2022: Stone Carving

This Workshop ran 5 March 2022 – 19 March 2022

During this workshop, students first learned how to use tools to carve a basic three-dimensional form before building on these techniques to carve and assemble a small structure as a group. This course was a great opportunity to learn not only a new skill but also explore its historic and architectural context.

 

Spring 2022: Wood Turning

This Workshop ran 5 March 2022 – 19 March 2022

Woodturning is a unique form of woodworking that uses a tool called a lathe. In all other forms of woodworking, the wood is still, and it is the tool that is moving to create cuts.

Spring 2022: Mixing Colour

This Workshop ran 26 February 2022 – 13 March 2022

Over three sessions, students worked with watercolours to learn why some paint mixtures produce ‘fresh’ colours and some produce ‘muddy’ colours. As well as mixing colour, students explored the sheen and texture of paint and how it affects the appearance of colour, as well as the way colours interact with one another optically to create an illusion of colour.

Spring 2022: Jewellery Making

This Workshop ran 26 February 2022 – 26 March 2022

During this workshop, students learned traditional techniques such as sawing, filing, soldering and annealing to complete a personal piece of jewellery to take home.

Spring 2022: Etching

This Workshop ran 26 February 2022 – 26 March 2022

Etching is a 500 year old process and still very much used in the world today. During this workshop, students learned various techniques including, soft ground etching, sugar lift aquatint and developed prints that they were able to home and add to their portfolios. Spring 2022: Under the Sea Glass Flameworking

This Workshop ran 21 February 2022 – 25 February 2022

On this 5-day course, artist Zoe Garner guided students through the exciting possibilities of glass flameworking. Students learned the basics of the flameworking technique using borosilicate glass rods (PYREX) and experimented with a range of techniques to design and create a collection of unique 3-dimensional sea-life inspired forms.  

Spring 2022: Making a Child’s Chair

This Workshop ran 21 February 2022 – 25 February 2022

During this workshop, students learned about frame construction methods, staining and surface finishes before creating their own small, traditionally upholstered oak chair. Students were also introduced to the wonders of gilding and were able to add a series of gilded patrea in 22ct gold leaf to their chairs. See photos from the workshop here.

Spring 2022: Hand & Lock – Contemporary Couture Embroidery

This Workshop ran 14 February 2022 – 18 February 2022

Over 5 days budding embroiderers were introduced to a selection of techniques used at Hand & Lock and in the world of couture embroidery. The techniques taught in the class are used regularly in Paris couture houses and are often seen on the catwalk.
