Spring 2022: Making a Child’s Chair

This Workshop ran 21 February 2022 – 25 February 2022

During this workshop, students learned about frame construction methods, staining and surface finishes before creating their own small, traditionally upholstered oak chair. Students were also introduced to the wonders of gilding and were able to add a series of gilded patrea in 22ct gold leaf to their chairs.

Spring 2022: Hand & Lock – Contemporary Couture Embroidery

This Workshop ran 14 February 2022 – 18 February 2022

Over 5 days budding embroiderers were introduced to a selection of techniques used at Hand & Lock and in the world of couture embroidery. The techniques taught in the class are used regularly in Paris couture houses and are often seen on the catwalk.

Spring 2022: Plant People, Marionette Puppet Making

This Workshop ran 14 February 2022 – 16 February 2022

In this workshop, students designed, made and learned to operate their own walking marionette! Students received a puppet making kit in the post and learned all the techniques needed to create their own unique creatures and bring them to life.

2021: Geometric Designs on Spheres – Online

This Workshop ran 6 November 2021 – 4 December 2021

In this practical workshop, inspired by spherical art forms in nature and the traditional Japanese art of Temari Balls, students learned how to work with geometric designs on a spherical surface.

2021: Jewellery Making

This Workshop ran 6 November 2021 – 4 December 2021

During this workshop, students learned traditional techniques such as sawing, filing, soldering and annealing to complete a personal piece of jewellery to take home.

2021: Marquetry

This Workshop ran 23 October 2021 – 6 November 2021

In this workshop, students were given the chance to learn all about the specialist tools and techniques involved in wood marquetry, from how to sharpen the various chisels and knives to how to identify the different woods available, as well as planning and making an original geometry panel.

2021: Eco-Fashion Upcycling – Online

This Workshop ran 18 September 2021 – 16 October 2021

Upcycling simply means reusing discarded objects in such a way as to create a product of higher value. In Eco-fashion it is adding new life to clothes that would otherwise end up in landfill. This is a good way to do our bit to help the environment, through sustainable lifestyle choices, and remembering that all the resources and people that made our clothes matter.

2021: Design a Hand-Painted Wallpaper & Fit Into a Paper Scale Model

This Workshop ran 11 September 2021 – 9 October 2021

Over five sessions, students designed a small-scale, hand-painted wallpaper on canvas, commonly used by professional mural artists. They then used their design to decorate a pop-up scale model of the corner of a room.
