Summer 2023: Fortnums x TCDT Employment Programme: Human Resources & Visual Merchandising

This Workshop ran on 22 August 2023

During the final in a series of employment programme workshops, run in collaboration with Fortnum & Mason, students explored what it is like to work within the store’s Human Resources and Visual Merchandising departments.  Each Fortnums x TCDT Employment Programme workshop allows students to meet with at least two different departments to learn about their role and growth in the business, what they love doing and some of the challenges. Speakers will also offer career advice should the students wish to grow their career in the visited departments.

Summer 2023: Plaster Carving

This Workshop ran 21 August 2023 – 25 August 2023

This was a unique opportunity for students to experience plaster carving with a practicing sculptor in his studio. Students practiced relief and piercing carving techniques and received an introduction to plaster casting and mould making. The patterns used for the intro exercises focused on the geometric and biomorphic patterns and techniques of the Islamic lands, but students were able to draw on a multitude of traditional designs for their final projects.

Summer 2023: Embroidery

This Workshop ran 21 August 2023 – 25 August 2023

During this online workshop, students used a variety of embroidery threads and techniques to create beautiful embroidered pieces.

Summer 2023: Woodcarving

This Workshop ran 21 August 2023 – 25 August 2023

In this intensive five day course, students learned the basics of woodcarving using traditional hand tools in a professional woodcarver’s workshop. They learned how to use a set of chisels and a mallet to carve wood using various different techniques that have been used by woodcarvers for centuries. 

Summer 2023: Enamelling

This Workshop ran 21 August 2023 – 25 August 2023

In this workshop, students were taught techniques including shaping, bending, hammering, sawing, soldering, texturing and enamelling, using materials such as silver, copper and brass.

Summer 2023: Sign Writing on Skateboards

This Workshop ran 15 August 2023 – 18 August 2023

In this workshop, students learned how to paint a box or skate board using traditional, timeless brushwork and pinstriping techniques. Practicing with a mahl stick (a stick with a soft leather or padded head used by painters) and enamel paints, students acquired new design, shading and lining talents and learned to master some serious brushwork skills!

Summer 2023: Sewing & Dressmaking

This Workshop ran 14 August 2023 – 18 August 2023

Beginners and students of all levels were able to learn or improve their sewing skills in this workshop run by highly experienced Creative Dimension Trust tutor Jose Hendo. A no fuss, easy approach helped students to create unique clothes that fit and make beautiful, inexpensive gifts and accessories.

Summer 2023: Ornamental Drawing – Scrollwork

This Workshop ran 12 August 2023 – 13 August 2023

In this workshop, led by artist and author Stephanie June Ellis, students explored ornamentation through the decorative arts of the world’s greatest traditions. Focusing on Ornate Scrollwork, students drew inspiration from and took a close look at the common forms found throughout Ancient Monuments, Indigenous Art and Textiles.

Summer 2023: Ceramic Tile Making

This Workshop ran 8 August 2023 – 10 August 2023

During this three-day course students designed and decorated their own set of bespoke wall tiles.
